SPL Competitions Bring Sound to another Stratosphere
Take a moment to think about the loudest sound you’ve ever heard:, maybe it’s the blast of a rocket launching, the piercing screams at a rock concert, or perhaps it’s the roar of a jet on take off. Then imagine being inside a tightly sealed car with that same volume, only this time the noise has been cranked up even louder. Seems unimaginable, right? It isn’t. These sounds are real and are put to the test in sound pressure level competitions (SPL) throughout the world.
SPL competitions are decibel (dB) drag racing events where competitors go head-to-head for two or three seconds for the revered title of loudest vehicle. Pioneer is no stranger to the SPL arena. The company has dedicated engineering power to produce a line of subwoofers and amplifiers that can withstand the most punishing sound applications, like SPL competitions, making them extremely durable. Pioneer also sponsors some of the top competitors in the SPL scene, including Scott Owens and Kyle Witherspoon.
Last year, Pioneer helped Scott Owens become part of history at the 2005 USACi and IdBL World Finals in Kansas City, Missouri. Owens became the first person in the world to break the 180dB barrier using 13 Pioneer Premier® TS-W5000SPL subwoofers powered by 52 Premier PRS-D5000SPL amplifiers, deeming his 2002 Ford® F-250 “The loudest car in the world”. To put that in perspective, Owens’ sound system was equivalent to the sound of a rocket launching and louder than the take off of a jet airplane. Owens is the first to take first place in all four SPL sanctioning bodies World Finals, and remains the top contender in the sport. For 2006, Owens is replacing his woofers with the new Pioneer Premier subwoofers, the next generation of the loudest subwoofers on the planet.

Owens’ teammate Kyle Witherspoon is an SPL Champion in the Extreme 1-2 Class and has also generated a lot of buzz in the SPL community. Witherspoon recently won the championship in IdBL Ultimate 1 class and dB Drag. Witherspoon competes with a 2004 Scion® xB that holds two Pioneer Premier TS-W5000SPL subwoofers powered by eight Pioneer Premier PRS-D5000SPL amplifiers. Kyle is currently updating his vehicle with two of the new Pioneer Premier subwoofers, massive 15" woofers that should propel him to new heights in the sport.
Look for Owens and Witherspoon at key SPL events in 2008.
